TO REMEMBER HUNGARY 1956
MEMORY
FLAME
Call
The University of Debrecen and the City of Debrecen,
prompted by the historic act of its
students and citizens,
who were the first to march in the street with their demands
in Hungary 50 years ago,
will ignite the memorial flame
at 11 a.m., October 23, 2006,
as an homage to
the 1956 Hungarian revolution and war of independence.
This is a call to
our international partner institutions and sister cities
as well as interested communities and educational institutions
all over the world to join us in paying homage:
let the flame of remembrance be kindled
at as many points of the world as possible,
at 11 a.m., October 23rd , local time,
and let it burn until November 4,
when the adverse winds of history
blew the flame of revolution out.
Let the memorial flame
leap across Hungary and around the Earth,
with the passing of the Sun.
Let this be a universal salute
to the heroism and martyrdom of
a revolution forsaken and crushed;
and to a revolution and war of independence,
whose light was brutally extinguished by totalitarian tyranny,
yet, the process it started
has been shaping our life up to this day
and changed the course of world history.
